5 Benefits of a Pergola
November 15, 2020Marble vs. Travertine Pavers – Which is Best?
December 2, 2020Manufactured and natural stone pavers are an affordable and easy way to give your garden a facelift. Installing a small paver patio can give your garden a touch of extra beauty and visual appeal. Not to mention it could increase the value of your property.
Installing pavers over concrete is a smart option. Pavers are durable and last for years, meaning you won’t need to worry after installation. Given that pavers add so much and last for so long, you should learn how to do the job correctly. Installing pavers properly leaves you with a finish that you love. If you aren’t installing them yourself, here’s what to expect from the process.
1. Mark Off The Project Area
The first step of installing a small paver patio is determining the size and location of the project. Take time to understand how your pavers will fit in with the overall landscape. We recommend using landscaping paint or chalk to mark the paving patterns for square pavers. Stakes and twine also help when outlining a project area.
Outline the project area to get a better visual representation of how much space your project will use. This step also helps identify potential problems such as landscaping features and utilities that could get in the way.
2. Carefully Plan the Layout
One of the worst things you could do when installing a small paver patio is pave as you go, especially with a delicate project like installing pavers around pool or other tricky areas. It’s a good idea to play around with pavers before using them to get a better feel for how they fit together. This step also helps you identify layouts and designs that you like.

3. Excavate the Area
More often than not, homeowners construct patios and similar paver projects from scratch. It would be best if you carefully excavate the project area at least a few inches, unless you are building pavers on top of an existing surface, such as installing pavers over concrete.
You may be able to use a spade and wheelbarrow to excavate a small area. Large areas will require specialist equipment and tools for excavating.
4. Prepare the Base
Your project must take advantage of the best base for pavers. Every paver project needs a solid, stable, and level base. This foundation enhances the beauty and functionality of a paver project. After clearing the area, you should take some time to remove roots, rocks, sticks, and debris that could interfere with the base—removal can help to prevent weeds in between pavers, which can do lasting damage to the project.
Next, you should compact the soil to prevent it from shifting and settling over time. Finally, pour the quarry process or crushed stone into the area to create a sub-base. Compact the sub-base and tamp it down. We recommend creating a sub-base layer of between three and four inches.
5. Establish the Project Borders
The next step is to lay stones and pavers to act as the outside border of the project. Creating a frame further establishes the boundaries and makes it easier to install sand and pavers during the project.
6. Pour and Rake the Sand
Sand is a critical component of laying pavers. The sand keeps the pavers in place both when during installation and over time. Sand also helps if you want to know how to keep pavers from sinking. You should cover the entire project area with sand to a depth of around half an inch. You should talk to a professional if you have any doubts about how much sand you need.
After laying the sand, you should rake it out. Rake the sand until it is evenly distributed across the project area, ready for the pavers.
7. Lay the Pavers
Now it’s time to lay the pavers, doing so carefully and deliberately. We recommend working inwards from the outside edges. Working this way ensures that the pavers are evenly spread and fit correctly within your design’s original scope.
You can create a cobbled look for your project by placing different-sized pavers next to each other instead of using a symmetrical pattern. Either way, ensure that the pavers are pressed firmly into the sand and have enough space for the joints. There should be enough space between the pavers for polymeric sand. Use the sand for filling gaps between pavers. More on this later.
8. Sweep the Project Area
Grab a broom and brush off the remaining sand after laying your pavers.
9. Introduce Adhesive or Polymeric Sand
Most patio pavers Fort Lauderdale and DIY-ers use polymeric sand in their project. Sand creates an adhesive for the pavers, but other kinds of adhesive are available, just as there are different types of pavers.
Polymeric sand for between patio pavers is the best binding agent for a paver project. The sand keeps the pavers looking and functioning their best for years to come. One of the last steps when installing a small paver patio is pouring the sand out over the surface area of the project. Use a brush to work the sand between the joints of the pavers to fill in the gaps.
The polymeric sand should fill the gaps between the sand. Remove loose sand from the tops of pavers to prevent issues such as hardening.
Use a hose and spray nozzle to splash a mist of water over the polymeric sand to activate it. The misting process hardens the polymers in the sand to boost the strength and integrity of pavers and the joints between them, securing a robust foundation.
10. Maintain Pavers Over Time
The project isn’t over just because you completed laying the pavers. You can also finish up installing a small paver patio by adding some furniture. Check out more patio ideas for small backyards.
