December 6, 2016Over the past few years, synthetic turf has become a popular alternative to natural grass lawns. Synthetic grass isn’t anchored by soil, obviously; you might be wondering what kind of material is at the base of fake grass. Well, it’s called infill, and there are a number of different varieties available. If you’re thinking of installing a synthetic turf lawn on your West Palm Beach property, consider the following infill materials.
Rubber Synthetic Turf
There are multiple types of rubber infill that can be used for synthetic lawns. One is called crumb rubber, which is so named because it comes in small pieces, or “crumbs.” This type of infill is most often used in sports fields. Some rubber infill can be coated with sealants or colorants to enhance the appearance.
Sand
Many property owners opt for silica sand infill for their artificial lawns. This type of infill is chemically stable, non-toxic, and works well by itself or in conjunction with another type of infill. Some homeowners opt for coated silica sand, which offers more durability and resistance to bacteria.
Organic
If you would like to introduce a natural element to your artificial turf, you might consider organic materials such as cork or coconut shell fibers. Organic infill is popular because it simply returns to the environment once it reaches the end of its life cycle. After a few years, you can add more organic infill to maintain your artificial lawn’s integrity.
Synthetic
For high performance and durability, there’s synthetic infill options like ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and thermo plastic elastomer (TPE). EPDM is highly resistant to wear and tear, and can endure sustained exposure to high temperatures. TPE, on the other hand, is excellent for giving your artificial lawn a little extra color, as it is designed to maintain its hue over the years. Synthetic infill is also easy to recycle once you decide to replace your lawn.
